History Conference
Friday through Sunday
September 16th - 18th, 2011
                         Ste. Genevieve 2nd Annual History Conference
                                                                          In memory of Bernie Schram

The Foundation for Restoration of Ste. Genevieve invites you to join us for a
weekend of Ste. Genevieve history.

The Conference will begin on the evening of Friday, September 16th, with a complementary
reception from 5 to 7 PM for conference participants in the courtyard of the Felix Vallé State
Historic Site’s Shaw House located at Merchant and Second streets.

The formal conference will be held from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, September 17, 2011
in the Ste. Genevieve County Community Center. To reach the Center, take Exit 150 on I-55
and go east. The center will be on your right.

Registration will begin at 8:00 AM in the Community Center and a light continental breakfast will
be served until 8:55 AM.

Presentations will begin at 9:00 a.m. and include the following:

Dr. Carl Ekberg, author/scholar – “François Jasmin: From Black Slave to Free Entrepreneur”
– Dr. Ekberg is the quintessential scholar on colonial Ste. Genevieve with many publications to
his credit and will discuss the transition from the Old Town to the New.

Tom Greminger, US Civil War historian – “The Civil War in Ste. Genevieve County”

Booker Rucker, MO Parks – “The History of Ste. Genevieve’s Memorial Cemetery”

Peter Leach, author – “Gone by Sundown – A Story about the Ste. Genevieve Race Riot”

Jim Baker, MO Dept of Natural Resources - “Prodigal Son – The Brief Life of Louis Felix
Valle” – Jim is the site administrator of the Felix Vallé House State Historic site and is a well
known local scholar and speaker on a variety of Ste. Genevieve related subjects.

Bob Mueller, Foundation for the Restoration of Ste. Genevieve, Inc – “Lawyers and
Politicians in the Post-Colonial Period” – Bob is a local historian and genealogist and he will
present the 1935 Bi-Centennial Celebration, an event that brought the town together for a week-
long event.

The presentations will be followed by a Speaker Question and Answer Period
Lunch will be provided on site from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.

On Sunday, September 18th, the Foundation will host a complementary walking tour of
Memorial Cemetery and Catholic Church beginning at 11:00 AM. This one hour tour will be
guided by Bob Mueller and Mickey Koetting of the Foundation. The tour will begin at Memorial
Cemetery (located at Merchant and 5th Street).

The cost for the event is $45 per person and it includes the reception, continental breakfast,
conference, lunch and the Sunday tour.
